Cabo Polonio is one of the places with greatest natural richness and fragility in the Uruguayan Atlantic Coast.
On July 20, 2009, Decree #337 was approved by the Uruguayan Executive Power. With the approval of this decree, not only was the first phase of establishing a protective statute for the Cabo Polonio area completed, but it also incorporated Cabo Polonio into the National System of Protected Areas (SNAP for its acronyms in Spanish), under the category of National Park. This process began in 2006 with the inter-governmental proposal for incorporation, and there were many debates, objections and approvals throughout the past two years.
Although there is still much to do, the fact that Cabo Polonio has been included in the SNAP can already be considered an important achievement from the environmental point of view.
With the degree now approved, the next step is to install a Specific Counseling Commission that will be responsible for creating a Management Plan which would establish guidelines and general plans corresponding to the area, while seeking for and respecting the participation of all involved actors, especially within the local community and landowners.
