In December 2008, IDEA launched the “Conservation Trust for Paraguay’s Biodiversity”, a new initiative carried out jointly with Financiera Atlas S.A.E.C.A.’s Fiduciary Department.
The Conservation Trust’s main objective is to help ensure the human and constitutional right to live in a healthy and ecologically-balanced environment. This objective is to be achieved through in situ conservation of biodiversity, benefiting both present and future generations of Paraguayans.
A trust is an autonomous patrimony destined to fulfill an objective established in the initial contract. It is administrated by a financial institution specialized in fiduciary business, authorized by the Central Bank to act as a fiduciary administrator for the specified patrimony. The financial institution is required to periodically submit reports. The autonomous patrimony of the “Conservation Trust for Paraguay’s Biodiversity” will be composed of important areas for biodiversity conservation, movable assets and cash.
Who can participate:
● Natural persons, local or foreign.
● Local or foreign companies.
● Local or foreign organizations.
● With previous approval from the judiciary authorities, individuals who must compensate the environmental damages they have caused.
IDEA’s role will not consist of administrating or disposing of the Trust’s assets. As a trustor, it will simply request reports and monitor the transparent administration and conservationist management of the Trust.
As trustee, Financiera Atlas S.A.E.C.A. will be in charge of the Trust’s administration. Until new trustors join the Conservation trust, the Trust contract provides for the creation of a Trustors Committee, which will be composed of individuals or organizations that will contribute new resources for the attainment of the objectives of the “Conservation Trust for Paraguay’s Biodiversity”. They will share IDEA’s role of monitoring the Trust’s administration.
IDEA has provided this Trust two properties in the Paraguayan Pantanal (Department of Alto Paraguay) as fiduciary property. These two properties are adjacent to each other: Fortin Galpon (1595 hectares) and Isla del Paraiso (1501 hectares).
