Recognizing climate change as one of the biggest challenges our world faces today, IDEA leads numerous initiatives in order to increase our society’s awareness on each citizen’s responsibility with regards to this issue.
IDEA became a carbon neutral organization in 2008. It calculated its total carbon emissions for 2007, including its energy consumption, paper use and corporate travel. Once this total was obtained, and in order to compensate for its emissions, IDEA invested funds in a project that works with communities that substitute timber for rice biomass. IDEA hopes to repeat this neutralization process in the future.

Also in 2008, IDEA formed an alliance with First Climate, a European company dedicated to the development of carbon credit projects by means of a global network. First Climate works on the commercialization of carbon credits through intelligent products directed at possible clients interested in neutralizing their companies. One of First Climate’s objectives is to look for Clean Development Mechanism projects and voluntary carbon market credits in Latin America. As an associated organization, IDEA is interested in looking for opportunities in Paraguay.
During the same year, IDEA joined the Climate Neutral Network (CN Net), a network of countries, cities, companies, associations and organizations interested in cutting their greenhouse gas emissions in order to achieve three main objectives:
1) Diffuse plans and strategies members have carried out in order to achieve climate neutrality.
2) Serve as a forum through which those who aspire to obtain climate neutrality can network and learn more about how to reduce their own emissions.
3) Act as an honest broker, assembling participants from developed and developing countries in order to achieve sustainable development and support the Millennium Development Goals. This initiative is supported by UNEP and is named “Climate Neutral Network” instead of “Carbon Neutral Network” since its long-term goal is to reduce all greenhouse gases, including those in the Kyoto and Montreal Protocols.
