Last Thursday, July 8, Judge Ms. María Griselda Caballero urged the Secretary of Environment to reply within a period of 30 days to the request to access public information with regards to the environment. This request was presented by the Center for the Defense of Public Interests (Centro de Defensa del Interés Público – CENDIP) on May 10 by means of Final Decision number 40. The term expires on August 8.

5th Congress for Environmental Law Students in Sao Paulo, Brazil

The Environmental Law and Economics Institute—IDEA participated in the 14th International Congress on Environmental Law – 15th Brazilian Congress on Environmental Law – 5th Congress on Environmental Law for Portuguese and Spanish-speaking Countries and the 5th Congress for Environmental Law Students, organized by the “Law for a Green Planet” Institute-Brazil in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Within the framework of these Congresses, Maria del Mar Zavala and Ezequiel Santagada presented on Sunday, May 23rd a “Study on the Forest Legal Framework of the Republic of Paraguay.”

Paraguayan Payment for Ecosystem Markeplace initiative is included in Ecosystem Marketplace report

Ecosystem Marketplace launched a report on the State of Biodiversity Markets: Offset and Compensation Markets Worldwide. The report is a summary of biodiversity offset and compensatory mitigation programs by geographical region, including their drivers, buyers and sellers, and unit of credit. The report’s main objective is to enable market participants to make informed decisions and learn from the experience of others; ultimately allowing fair, stable and transparent conservation markets to develop.

Interview with Wangari Maathai—Nobel Peace Price

IDEA’s President, Sheila Abed visited Nairobi, Kenya for a meeting in the United Nations Environment Programme. During her stay in Nairobi, Ms. Abed met with Nobel Laureate and Founder of the Green Belt Movement, Wangari Maathai. During the interview, both talked about issues related to the environment and democracy, among them access to information, participation and justice, as well as governance programs. They also mentioned the importance of enforcement of environmental legislation as a key element to avoid the increasing degradation of ecosystems, and identified capacity-building of legal professionals as an urgent necessity.

Last Friday, February 26, IDEA, jointly with the Paraguayan Supreme Court of Justice held a conference titled “Jurisprudence and Current examples in Access to Information in the Americas”. This was the third event organized within the framework of the Access to Public Information Week, and was also sponsored by the Access to Information Advocacy Group (Grupo Impulsor de Acceso a la Información), the World Bank, the Citizen Initiatives Support Program (Programa de Apoyo a las Iniciativas Ciudadanas), CIRD, USAID, the Finnish Cooperation Fund, The Access Initiative: World Resources Institute, Seeds for Democracy (Semillas para la Democracia), Free Foundation (Fundación Libre) and the Center for Judicial Studies (Centro de Estudios Judiciales).

IDEA drafts a position paper on the production and trade of vegetable charcoal in Paraguay

During the last months of 2009, the Institute on Environmental Law and Economics – IDEA drafted a position paper on the production and trade of vegetable charcoal in Paraguay. In this document, IDEA describes the current situation of this sector providing data including volumes of production, product prices, transportation, main export destinations as well as the applicable legal framework. Taking this into account, the document provides possible courses of action that may be taken to achieve the sustainable production of vegetable charcoal and render its trade more transparent.
