Interview with Wangari Maathai—Nobel Peace Price

IDEA’s President, Sheila Abed visited Nairobi, Kenya for a meeting in the United Nations Environment Programme. During her stay in Nairobi, Ms. Abed met with Nobel Laureate and Founder of the Green Belt Movement, Wangari Maathai. During the interview, both talked about issues related to the environment and democracy, among them access to information, participation and justice, as well as governance programs. They also mentioned the importance of enforcement of environmental legislation as a key element to avoid the increasing degradation of ecosystems, and identified capacity-building of legal professionals as an urgent necessity.

“Jurisprudence and Current examples in Access to Information in the Americas”

Last Friday, February 26, IDEA, jointly with the Paraguayan Supreme Court of Justice held a conference titled “Jurisprudence and Current examples in Access to Information in the Americas”. This was the third event organized within the framework of the Access to Public Information Week, and was also sponsored by the Access to Information Advocacy Group (Grupo Impulsor de Acceso a la Información), the World Bank, the Citizen Initiatives Support Program (Programa de Apoyo a las Iniciativas Ciudadanas), CIRD, USAID, the Finnish Cooperation Fund, The Access Initiative: World Resources Institute, Seeds for Democracy (Semillas para la Democracia), Free Foundation (Fundación Libre) and the Center for Judicial Studies (Centro de Estudios Judiciales).
