Where we work

Brazil

In Brazil we work through a strategic alliance with Law for a Green Planet (Direito para um Planeta Verde), an institution with a well-earned prestige in the field of Environmental Law, which organizes the greatest annual conference of environmental law experts from the Americas, among other events.

Jointly with them we are entering the challenging South American giant, seeking to install a regional perspective and attention to transboundary issues.

ABRAMPA Conference

The Brazilian Association of Environmental Prosecutors organized a conference with IDEA’s and Law for a Green Planet’s support. This was one of the first initiatives carried out within the framework of the agreement signed between both institutions and with the objective to promote the right to live in a healthy and ecologically-balanced environment. The conference gathered authorities from all of the prosecutors’ offices of the Amazon Basin, a region of great importance for the entire world given its biodiversity. The conference took place in Macapa, Brazil from March 4-6, 2009. It consisted of various panels on issues such as “The World Economic Crisis and the Environment”, “Current Socio-Environment Conflicts”, “The State of Amapa within an Environmental Context”, “Sharing Experiences on the Promotion of Socio-Environmental Justice”, “The Role of the Prosecutor’s Office in the Promotion of Socio-Environmental Justice”, “Legal Mechanisms to Promote the Benefits of Environmental Services”.

IDEA’s President, Sheila Abed, participated with Prof. Antonio Herman Benjamin, Supreme Court Justice of Brazil, in the panel on “Environmental Law Challenges in an era of Climate Change” and spoke about the impact of Climate Change in legislation and how to adapt international guidelines related to the topic in order to apply them at the national level.
